“The thoughts that occur to me while I’m running are like clouds in the sky. Clouds of all different sizes. They come and they go, while the sky remains the same sky always. The clouds are mere guests in the sky that pass away and vanish, leaving behind the sky.”
-Haruki Murakami, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running
It’s no surprise that Haruki Murakami is turning 76, as his lifestyle speaks for itself.
When he began writing based on what I read in his memoir books, he changed his life.
However, before he became a writer, his life was not the same as it had been before, as he ran a jazz club or bar named Peter Cat.
He always wakes up late and does the job at his jazz club.
But when he became a writer, he sold his club and started focusing on writing.
He starts to sleep early at 9pm and wakes up at 4 am.
He disciplines himself by doing some exercise, in which running fits his personality. He talks about it in the book.
Everything we do starts in a thought, and sometimes those thoughts that we have might be harmful, causing overthinking, but for Murakami, running is not just for exercising but to stay sane, to get away from those negative or bad thoughts, which is good for our overall being and health.
