Characters are what you need in your story but there is something more than a character which is by rhyming in the whole story for it.
Batman is a character and it rhymes in the story of it when his past experiences define who he will become in the present his father and mother died because it killed by criminals and the Batman character is a symbol of Vengeance.
Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix in a standalone tale is a character about his past experiences which are isolated, bullied and disregarded by society and he transforms himself into a criminal mastermind known as Joker.
