Being a nationalist is not a bad thing, it only means that you are loyal to the country in which you were born.
A country starts to crack down when the culture of it will not be loved by the people who live or were originally born from it.
The citizens of the country will always be the first to protect and guard it because without the people or the citizens, then how can the country be prosperous?
Even those great countries did not have their own democracy back when empires ruled.
However, a country or nation starts to fall when those who lead it refuse to fight for their own citizens or people.
